Many people assume that solicitors, barristers, and police officers operate without oversight, but in reality, these professionals are accountable to various public bodies designed to protect your interests.

For solicitors, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is the main regulator ensuring that solicitors adhere to professional standards. If you have concerns about a solicitor’s conduct or service, you can raise a complaint with the SRA.

Barristers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board, and complaints about their professional behaviour can be directed there.

Police officers are overseen by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which investigates serious complaints and misconduct.

If you have issues with legal services or public bodies, you can also approach ombudsmen such as the Legal Ombudsman, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, or the Health Service Ombudsman, depending on the nature of your complaint.

It is your right and entitlement to use these services if you believe you have been treated unfairly or unprofessionally. Using these channels can help ensure accountability and improve the quality of public services.

Have you ever had to use one of these complaint services? What was your experience like?
